And it is a pleasingly diverse set of stories, filled with people of all races, ethnicities, religions and sexualities *thumbs up* I'm not sure it's worth buying the entire collection but it would be sad for you to miss out on the better ones. But I did get some really nice surprises here. I'm more of a Halloween type of girl - and all the genres that could possibly go with it. I'm not much of a romantic or a Christmas person, to be honest. but a collection of holiday-themed romances would never have occurred to me as something enjoyable. Then if you'd asked me what kind of short story collection I'd like to have from these favourites of mine, you would have got all kinds of weird and wonderful suggestions from me. If you'd asked me beforehand to name a list of YA authors that I'd like to appear in a short story collection, many of the ones here would have made that list: Stephanie Perkins, Laini Taylor, Holly Black, Gayle Forman, David Levithan and maybe Rainbow Rowell (I like but don't love her books). Like almost all short story collections by various authors, this one is a mixed bag of hidden gems and ones I didn't even finish. Though Lenny keeps a tidy trailer, has a steady job, and paid for her mom’s new set of teeth, something about him isn’t right. She lives in a trailer with her mom’s boyfriend, Lenny, and his grumpy dad, Frank. But instead, she is human, and left feeling inadequate and hopeless much of the time. She often wishes she were an octopus so that she had enough arms to wrangle her three younger siblings, clean the house, cook dinners, and complete her schoolwork. Seventh grade protagonist Zoey has a lot on her hands. I loved this novel because it is unlike anything else I have on my shelves. I’ll admit it! I have several days of online classwork to look through, but I’m totally putting it off for just a few more hours because I had to finish this book and share it with you. Ann Braden is the reason that I am behind on grading right now. She seemed to have a natural affinity with horses, and the great knowledge of horsemanship evident in Black Beauty was born from a lifetime's experience. From an early age she developed a strong love of animals and abhorred any form of cruelty towards them. Anna received her education at home from her mother, who as well as instilling in her a sense of Anna Sewell was a kind and generous woman whose great love for horses and desire to see them better treated resulted in the most celebrated animal story of the nineteenth century.īorn into a strict Quaker family who lived at Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, she was brought up to believe in the importance of self-reliance, moral responsibility and 'tender consideration for the Creatures of God'. They came back with an astounding 89 different book covers that impressed, delighted, and inspired them, representing work by 54 designers for 44 different publishers. So for the fifth year in a row, I surveyed a group of professional book cover designers (this year it was 29 of them) about their favorite covers of the year. I’m so excited to see how cover design changes from the ripple effect that this monumental year has created.” Me too. As designers we have this little power to propose what visual goes with these great stories, and in our current climate that is both exciting and no easy feat. Or, as Janet Hansen wrote in the note accompanying her choices, “I must admit-book cover design was not much on my mind this year (!), but this was a great exercise to reflect on what we do and whose work we admire. There were some stunning book covers created by some fantastic artists, and while they didn’t exactly solve the pandemic, they did make staying in my apartment all day long a little better. So consider it acknowledged, and I’ll follow that with the customary: and yet. It may actually be mandatory at this point to begin any kind of 2020 roundup with an acknowledgement of how shit the year was, and how impossible it was to focus on the good parts, and how anything roundup-able seems a little beside the point, all things considered. Through a series of misfortunes, Daisy and her new colleagues end up facing off against the sympathetically rendered hitwoman Ming Wei, who has been hired by politicians hoping to use the murder of a magician to further their ambitions. Daisy herself practices a different kind of magic, one that does not physically deplete her, but still comes with a price. Andre, in fact, manufactures bootleg mana, a necessity for any methodical magician who wants to replenish their body and their strength after a spell (and for any non-magician who wants a meth-like buzz). His business, however, is not a “document management company,” as he has claimed. In that much, he has represented himself honestly. Her new boss, Andre Swarz, really does need a typist, due to a childhood accident. The beginning of the novel finds Daisy Dell, a young black woman committed to the lifestyle of the Modern Girl, enjoying a night on the town, celebrating her new job as a typist. The setting is a fantasy-world version of our world’s 1920s. Still, it is a likeable story that cleverly and thoughtfully widens the possibility space for what the fantasy genre can do, and how it can do it. It did not quite succeed in capturing me and drawing me into the inner and outer world of its characters. Moonshine, Jasmine Gower’s debut novel, did not sweep me away. A completed new adult romance with a happy ending that leaves you feeling warm and fuzzy. Not most original but I totally understand why everyone is raving about it! I was intrigued from the first page and didn’t want to put it down. Wait For You is beautiful and emotional story. If the devastating truth comes out, will she resurface with one less scar?
